Online Shopping Behaviour of Men

Let me get straight to the point – from all my 13+ years working with online retailers such as our fantastic clients, user testing is the most enlightening and powerful activity that retailers can carry out to answer a very extensive range of questions which can be crucial to how their e-commerce site performs.

Below I am sharing some of the most prevalent behavioural traits of men when shopping online. There will always be some differences and many of these have been observed with female consumers, but this list is very much up-to-date and representative of the male population.

  1. Men have a low patience threshold
  2. Changing conventions doesn’t go down well amongst males
  3. A lack of transparency is a major issue
  4. Men are typically less concerned than women about delivery & returns costs
  5. Men are more likely to use filters to narrow down to specific products – hunter behaviour
  6. Men are typical y quicker to make a purchase decision if the price & description meets their expectations
  7. Men get concerned when they are being asked to provide un-necessary (to them at least) personal information
  8. Men are more likely to pick up the phone to speak to customers services when they experience issues on the previous points

For more in-depth insights into these behaviour traits take a look at my Econsultancy article Eight Online Shopping Behaviour Traits of Men.

Craig Sullivan on Usability Testing and Split Testing

One of my trusted and well respected industry peers, Craig Sullivan, has done a very good (and concise) job of summarising the benefits of usability testing and split testing for organisations in this short 3 minute video for Econsultancy.

A few key comments he makes are:

The higher up you go in an organisation, the less chance they have of guessing right… even the best user experience experts may be 60/70% at best

Testing removes ego and opinion from our work

The website isn’t for me, it isn’t being designed for me, and the choices that I would make as a consumer are not what our customers are making.

and my favourite quote…

The website and decision making should be put in the hands of your visitors, and this is a real sea change for organisations that get behind this kind of testing plan. It means they stop making silly decisions and start making decisions based on cold hard facts from consumer behaviour.

Moderated User Testing for Lakeland

We were were delighted to be asked by Lakeland to provide user testing as part of their new e-commerce re-platforming project. I must say that it has been a real pleasure working with Tony Preedy and the team and I’m looking forward to providing more user insights for Lakeland going forward.

Screenshot of the Lakeland website user tested by PRWD
Their new site launched recently and we have just published a press release following our involvement to date. The press release is below, and you may also want to read this on Econsultancy and How Do.

Lakeland appoint PRWD to deliver live customer insights to help launch their new e-commerce platform

Through a series of live user testing sessions PRWD have delivered customer insights to help launch Lakeland’s new e-commerce platform. During the design and development process PRWD were asked to run moderated, lab based user testing sessions with customers which enabled Lakeland to determine how their new user experience could be further improved, as well as identifying potential issues for visitors to the new website that need to be addressed prior to launch.

Lakeland’s new e-commerce platform uses some of the industries leading technologies and applications, and it was vital that the website delivered an experience where visitors can browse and shop intuitively, leading to improved online conversion rates.

Tony Preedy, Marketing Director at Lakeland, says:

“At Lakeland we’re committed to listening carefully to what our customers want, and tailoring our business to their needs. So when it came to launching our new website it was vital we included their feedback on our ideas during the build of the new site.

This feedback, gathered for us by PRWD via a series of usability tests, was extremely valuable and actionable and the resulting site has been received very positively”

Paul Rouke, Head of Usability at PRWD, comments:

“We worked closely with the Lakeland team to plan and deliver live user testing sessions which would provide the right type of insights to help make the website more usable before launching.

Lakeland are one of those retailers who recognise the importance of using user testing to gain invaluable insights from current and potential customers, especially when embarking on such a big project. We were very proud to be tasked with delivering these insights, and as with everyone involved we are delighted with the user experience that the new Lakeland website provides visitors. It has certainly elevated Lakeland’s e-commerce platform into one of the market leaders from my retail experience.”

Event Speaking – Usability: Whats The Use?

We’re delighted to be speaking alongside one of our partner companies Sigma at an upcoming event. Full event details below:

  • Title: Usability: What’s The Use?
  • Hosted by: The Department of Information and Communications MMU
  • When: Wednesday 4th May 2011, 12:00pm – 14:00pm
  • Where: Manchester Metropolitan University, Sandra Burslem Building Room 2.10, Oxford Road, M15 6BH
  • How to book: Book online on our Eventbrite page

Event Overview

For websites, good usability is a matter of survival. If a website is difficult to use, people leave. If the homepage fails to clearly state what a company offers and what users can do on the site, people leave. If users get lost on a website, they leave. For intranets and applications the question is one of productivity. In many organisations employees waste inordinate amounts of time searching for and assimilating the information they need to do their jobs. This lost time has a real, tangible value so ROI for designing internal systems with User Experience in mind, and spending some time testing and improving the usability of the system, is pretty compelling.

As people with a strong User Experience focus we don’t need to be convinced of the value of good usability, but for many companies who are thinking of revamping their site, intranet or portal it isn’t quite so clear cut.

Areas Explored

In this seminar we will explore:

  • How good user experience can make a real impact on the effectiveness of your site
  • Hints and tips on user-centered design for websites and applications
  • Why user testing is important?
  • The direct link between usability and revenue generation in eCommerce websites
  • Some case studies of real projects where user experience has been key to success
  • Design principles for mobile websites and app interfaces

Press Release – PRWD Help Launch Manchester’s First User Testing Lab

Web usability agency PRWD have helped launch the new usability testing laboratory at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

PRWD were the first company to use the facility for a commercial usability testing project, and were subsequently asked to help officially launch the facilities and speak at the launch event on Wednesday 24th November 2010.

Head of Usability Paul Rouke commented:

“The launch of MMU’s user testing facility in the heart of Manchester is excellent news for PRWD and for North West based businesses. We have tended to carry out usability testing projects in London due to the range of test facilities available, but now with the first commercially available laboratory in Manchester we expect to be carrying out more projects right on our doorstep.”

“The facilities available at MMU are of the highest quality, and its fantastic news for us and our clients that we have access to a range of cutting edge observation and analysis tools. I firmly believe that as companies, particularly retailers, focus more efforts and budget on usability and customer experience, facilities such as these at MMU will be more sought after.”

The laboratory is perfectly placed to support the design, development and assessment of a wide range software and hardware. It can support focus group based design, full user experience and usability analysis, eye tracking and user-centred design processes.

Louise Richards, Head of Division of Digital Media & Entertainment Technology at MMU, commented:

“PRWD are highly respected usability and user experience experts with a portfolio of household names as clients. They are natural partners for MMU and we have been only too pleased to develop our collaborations in evaluation, testing and research.”

“MMU has a fantastic user experience facility with the very best equipment which benefits our students and staff directly through industry relevant teaching and research. We provide academic expertise, insight and objectivity for a variety of evaluations, both simple and complex, and through commercial partners such as PRWD we are highly attuned to industry priorities.”

The launch event for the usability laboratory was a huge success, with over 60 people attending from a wide range of industries and disciplines who were all keen to find out more about the facilities and how they could benefit from usability focused services.

Usability Testing in Manchester

At PRWD we are delighted to confirm that Manchester finally had its own fully featured user testing laboratory available for commercial projects.

User testing (or usability testing) is one of our primary services that we provide our clients, and we tend to carry out the testing in London where there are superb user testing facilities. Although there are user research facilities in Manchester, its fantastic news for PRWD and North West based businesses that Manchester now has its very own user testing laboratory. In addition this is great news for retailers who will benefit from having user testing carried out in Manchester rather than the capital or other test facilities in the UK, of which there are very few, ensuring test participants can be sourced from the capital of the North.

The lab is set up with full video camera capture of all user behaviour, using Noldus Observer XT data capture and analysis. MMU have also invested further in an eye tracker plus physiological data capture such as heart rate to measure engagement/excitement etc.

Eye Tracking Facilities

Eye tracking adds important information to observational studies. Eye movements reflect emotions and cognitive processes, which add extra value to your research. The Noldus Observer® XT allows you to analyze the eye tracker’s video output and enables you to record the context in which the eye movements occurred.

  • Analyze eye tracking videos
  • Relate mental processes to behavior
  • Synchronous display of behavior, gaze data, and video
  • Analyze the combination of behavior and gaze data
  • Discover that additional modalities are possible

Case Study – Intranet Usability Evaluation for The Hyde Group

PRWD have delivered exactly what was required of the project and done so in an extremely efficient way.

The information gained from respondents, both qualitative and quantitative, helped to reinforce the need for change and gave a clear direction for travel.

David Boardman, Communications Director

Objectives

Provide usability consultancy and user research to identify improvements to Hyde Housing’s intranet system, Hydewide.

This was the first such research carried out on the usability of Hydewide, and would form a major part of the future development strategy for the intranet.

PRWD were asked to conduct a range of qualitative and quantitive research into the usability of Hydewide, in order to produce a report detailing potential usability improvements.

Background

Hyde Housing Group is one of the UK’s largest housing associations, managing over 43,000 properties, principally located across the South of England. Hyde employs over 1,600 staff, based at their Head Office in London and at branch offices in a wide variety of locations. Hyde also coordinates with local and national government agencies.

Hyde’s intranet system, Hydewide, provides vitally important information to staff members and helps to keep staff across the group in touch with each other and with the latest developments. Prior to PRWD’s involvement, the intranet had grown organically with no user testing or usability analysis.

What We Did

PRWD carried out extensive user research, using the following methods: -

  • Interviews and user testing, with employees from across the group
  • In-depth questionnaire sent out to all employees
  • Expert evaluation of Hydewide, carried out by Paul Rouke

The interviews involved visiting several locations, including London, Peterborough, Southampton and Brighton. The staff members interviewed held a range of different positions within the group and had different perspectives on the usability of Hydewide as it related to their role. The interviews involved building trust and confidence, ensuring that all interviewees offered their thoughts. Where possible, interviews also included ‘guerilla’ user testing, where users carried out simple tasks using Hydewide in order to identify problems.

The questionnaire was designed in collaboration with Hyde’s Communications Department and the internal Communications Champions, staff members who have special responsibility for supporting change and improvement within the group.

The expert evaluation was based on a comparison of Hydewide to industry-standard best practices, identifying weaknesses in the concept, design or implementation of the intranet.

Finally, all these findings were collated into a detailed report and presentation for Hyde’s executive management team.

Results and Next Steps

The questionnaire received a response rate in excess of 20%, and along with the enthusiastic response of staff members in interviews, provided valuable feedback from Hydewide users. Many of the findings from user feedback were supported by the expert evaluation, which identified many similar improvements and others beyond.

The final recommendations were divided into three categories, based on the extent of work required to implement them – quick wins, improvements and new developments. This provided immediate actions to be taken, some of which were implemented immediately.

The report now forms part of the plan for future development of Hydewide, and the process of staff involvement has ensured that staff throughout the business are fully behind the planned changes.

Client Testimonials

PRWD have delivered exactly what was required of the project and done so in an extremely efficient way.

The information gained from respondents, both qualitative and quantitative, helped to reinforce the need for change and gave a clear direction for travel.

The reporting enabled us to highlight quick wins together with a vision for longer term improvements.
The feedback from the people who were involved in the analysis was extremely positive. They all felt that Paul and Rob were approachable and really understood their needs.
The resulting report was presented to the senior managers and the recommendations approved.

It was a pleasure working with PRWD and I would highly recommend them to add value and deliver real results.

David Boardman, Communications Director

It was especially useful to get feedback from the interviews as colleagues seemed to be more
candid with PRWD so hopefully gave a real insight and so will appreciate changes made even more.

PRWD’s professionalism and knowledge has made this project a pleasure to undertake and I am confident that the resulting information will prove invaluable to the development of our intranet.

Ruth Appiah, Communications Manager
